Free-Form D

Free-Form D is a 3-person strategy for defense.  Where your traditional 3-person defense has a left, center, and right, Free-Form D has 3 "roles" that each player will constantly roll through.

Engaged Position
The Engaged player is the player closest to the puck.  This player sticks to the puck like glue.  It is his job to control the momentum of the puck.

Recovery Position
After the Engaged player is taken out of the play, he takes the Recovery Position on the surface.  He should face his own goal and generally stay between one and two lane lines behind the play.

Waiting Position
When the Engaged player moves into the Recovery Position, the person formerly in the Recovery Position moves into the Waiting Position.  The Waiting Position is underwater, facing the opponent's goal, approximately one lane line behind the Engaged Position.  The Waiting Position becomes the Engaged Position when the person in the Engaged Position either passes the puck, goes up for air, or gets beat.
